Thirteen-year-old Rendria Marina Beaufort is nothing but a doll, putting on faces to please the beast ravaging her inside and out- her mother. When Rendria's great-aunt offers her a locket as an impossible escape route, Rendria is swept up through The Dragon Wall, into the jaws of a dragon and spat out in a small Welsh town called Pointed Valley. There, she discovers she should develop powers like levitation and shapeshifting.
Despite the villager's compassion, Rendria's internal voice tells her to trust no one because kindness is nothing but a disease that will incarnate you until you become immune. The magic-wielding villagers tell her a tale about a dragon and a girl born to vanquish it: the girl foretold to be Rendria herself. Rendria is then brought to a magical school where she tries her hand at making friends, trying not to fall in love, passing Forest class and staying alive.
As Rendria's hard core slaughters goblins and cold-shoulders bullies, the line between good and evil is blurred beyond comprehension. She begins to discover secrets not only about Pointed Valley but about her own decrepit past as a new power emerges from Rendria, time ticking down to slay the dragon
