Hana Katsuhito is the only granddaughter of Makoto Suzuki, a florist. Her grandmother is close friends with Shizune Suoh, the Suoh family matriarch. The two females have known each other since they were children, and despite going into different routes in life, with one becoming a florist and the other being a businesswoman, they have kept in touch ever since.
Before Hana was born, Makoto arranged for her daughter, Megumi Suzuki, to marry Shizune's son, Yuzuru Suoh. However, Yuzuru fell in love with a foreigner named Anne-Sophie de Grantaine in France and had an illegitimate child with her. That child was a son named René Tamaki Richard de Grantaine Suoh.
Enraged of her daughter getting cheated on, Makoto had Megumi marry Hayato Katsuhito, the eldest son of the CEO of a famous Cell Phone Brand called Pineapple. Their marriage brought forth Hana, becoming the Princess of the Katsuhito Family.
Sadly, Hana lost her father when she was five, causing her mother to fall into a severe depression, making Makoto help her daughter raise her granddaughter. Eight years later, thirteen-year-old Hana Katsuhito's world turned upside down when her paternal Uncle, Ryuuji Katsuhito, took her and her mother out of her father's will, causing them to become poor. And that ordeal led her mother to have a heart attack, which caused her to get into a coma.
Not wanting to live in the streets, Makoto reunited with her best friend, Shizue, at a famous tea shop. After explaining the situation to her best friend, Makoto asked if there was a way for Hana to become a part of the Suoh family. Having a soft spot for her best friend, Shizue decided to arrange for her grandson, fourteen-year-old Tamaki Suoh, to marry Makoto's granddaughter, Hana.
Even though Hana doesn't know Tamaki, she agrees with this arranged marriage because she wants to support her mother and grandmother by any means necessary.

"The fact I'm getting married off soon? Yep. Who to? Nope." I smile at him for being so nice, also speaking Japanese again.
"You don't know who to?"
"Nope, all I know is he goes to Ouran and has links to the Peony family."
"Everybody has links to the Peony family in one way or another; especially in our grade!"
"I know."
"Your family is law in England Kuri."
"Duh, that's why everybody's got a link, because we are the only family to have the country pretty much bowing to us."
"You and the Royals."
