The Academy was the only way to become a sorcerer, there was no quick easy way to join the most powerful, and most exclusive group in all of the 4 kingdoms. So, of course everyone wanted to join. 
The challenges were made so that not everyone could get to the Academy, and even once getting to the Academy your place as a sorcerer is not secure until you graduate, and there were many who never graduate. 
Brin lives in the sexist southern Kingdom, no women are allowed to participate in the challenges, but she needs to get out of that town.
