In the Empire of Cordelia, a year before their 21st birthday, the gentlemen receive Rigel's blessing-the power to create a star. And this star is given to a woman of their choosing, who will form their crown with the thread of fate. This is their coronet-their symbol of power.
A minority of men and women who do not receive this blessing are said to be being punished by Rigel for being unpure and unworthy.
Neirin Elisaria, about to turn 21, eager to get her own vision of her crown, was disenchanted when she received no such thing. But upon hiding that fact, she belatedly finds out that the reason she did not receive a vision was that she could create her own star.
