At the moment of his death, Wei Wuxian is sent back in time.  He wakes up in the Cold Spring of Cloud Recesses during the time when he was there to study.  Traumatized and exhausted Wei Wuxian attempts to end his life, only to be stopped by Lan Wangji.  At the same time Wen Qing awakens in Cloud Recesses with the memory of being burned to death in Koi Tower.  She is determined to ensure that this time she is able to protect her family, Wei Wuxian included.

The entire cultivation world turned against Wei Wuxian. The only one who did not, was Lan Wangji. That day at Nightless City, after Wei Wuxian fell from that cliff, Jiang Cheng stabbed Lan Wangji in the process. Lan Wangji didn't look back as he fell from that cliff after Wei Wuxian. The thing is, with the cultivation world thinking the two have died, Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian were now free from their clutches.
