Millicent is a young girl living on a quaint, peaceful island. Jonathan is a mysterious drifter with a dark side. One warm summer night, the two of them meet at Firefly Bay. They begin a fast, passionate romance which comes to an abrupt end when Jonathan leaves on a merchant ship. He promises to return one day to the small, abandoned port at Firefly Bay, and so Millicent waits and watches as the years go by. When a handsome man named Edmund washes up on the shore of the bay, Millicent hires him as a live-in helper. Despite the attraction between them, Millicent holds onto the love she had for Jonathan, and the promise she made to wait for him. Years later, when a ship finally docks at Firefly Bay, Millicent's life is thrown into turmoil.
