Having been apart for a year, Lan Wangji misses Wei Ying and Wei Ying misses Lan Zhan.
Having parted on the fork of that road outside Gusu, Lan Wangji needed to set the cultivation world straight and Wei Ying needed to reacquaint himself with the world he had come to live in now.
Lan Xichen was struggling at this point, working on his brother's residence, getting him to agree to security, attacks getting closer and closer to the new chief cultivator, and people coming alive and dying suddenly. Dividing Lan members between himself and Wangji already was leaving him thin. The last one had left him short of hand at Gusu.
Things were hectic when his uncle decided that he too was going to leave him without support: retirement.
He was desperate for an extra pair of expert hands.
So, he wrote a long letter, addressed to the Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation for help.

He is convinced that their reunion cannot happed due to the restraints of inter-sect politics and that he, as the future sect leader, cannot let both of them suffer knowing that they would not be able to be together. Then, he learns that Lan Wangji had taken matters into his own hands and had all but imprisoned Wei Wuxian in the Jingshi. He has to help at once and convince Wei Wuxian to not hold it against Lan Wangji and the Gusu Lan sect. He had to take care of him and help him recover from his surely unpleasant trauma. The thing is, Lan Xichen has also come to understand why his brother had been so smitten with the boy.
