Laurence Mendoza packs up his things in a hurry, desperate to leave his old life behind him. He leaves his two sisters and mother back in Chicago while he moves to a small town in Kansas. Hoping to stay out of the way and keep quiet, but his neighbors daughter likes to stir up trouble and he can't keep himself out of it. Vienna has spent her whole life trying to keep to herself, focusing on her studies. She never wanted to be a burden and definitely stayed out of trouble. That is, until the summer before her senior year, a girl who used to torment her, decides it would be fun to befriend Vienna, taking advantage of her niceness. Vienna's innocence allows her to think this might be the year shell get to hang out with the 'cool' kids and experience a different part of highschool she hasn't done before. This new 'friendship' not only pulls Vienna out of her shell and instills a new confidence within her, but also gets her caught up in situations she never imagine she'd be a part of.
