"Everyone believes that the favor of a god can determine a man's fate. We worship the gods and seek their guidance, we speak of their name in hopes of invoking a blessing, but their presence hasn't been felt for the past millennia." Her voice carried a sense of detachment, as if lamenting a memory she had watched countless times, yet she had not lived it herself.
"Why is that then? Why do we still invoke their name when they no longer care?"
"Perhaps... it is because at the end of the day, we still carry the proof that they have once graced this world. The gods are still watching. However, they no longer choose champions as if they were picking the best breed for a dog show."
Her companion's eyes narrowed at her words. "Maybe they decided we're advanced enough not to require aid from their blessings. Our magi-tech development might have deterred their desire to make us playthings." Her laugh echoed in the valley on which they rested for the night. "Ilyare, it is in the very DNA of divine beings to meddle in matters that do not concern their fate. The tales of our ancestors tell us that even they have paid the price of meddling with fate."
