In the aftermath of the Great War, Catherine Burke Myer has just turned 18 and is escaping from the work facility where she has lived her entire life. The facility is one of many built by Grid Technologies, a company that predicts human potential based on an unborn child's genetic makeup. Catherine was given up for adoption at birth with the promise that Grid Tech would raise her in accordance with her genetic destiny. All of society is obsessed with reaching ultimate potential. After the Great War, the government reestablished itself in order to rebuild. The country is now divided into 100 provinces that are ranked on the first day of each year. The province with the number one ranking hosts the capital city for the following year and receives the most benefits. Catherine resides in Province 3.
