In the aftermath of the Great War, Catherine Burke Myer has just turned 18 and is escaping from the work facility where she has lived her entire life. The facility is one of many built by Grid Technologies, a company that predicts human potential based on an unborn child's genetic makeup. Catherine was given up for adoption at birth with the promise that Grid Tech would raise her in accordance with her genetic destiny.

Catherine resides in Province 3. She wants out of the Grid Tech system, she wants a life of her own, and she wants... ‘off the grid.’
