AMOEBIC - from the Greek root amoibe, or "change."
On Easter, Rory Philman's life is turned upside down. After an unfortunate incident involving liquid courage, a pregnancy announcement, and a stroke, Rory comes out to his conservative Baptist parents--and is almost immediately signed up for St. Joseph's Reformatory Camp for Individuals Suffering From Same-Sex Attraction (or just St. Joseph's for short).
Now, he has nine weeks to fix his "sexual problems" and return home as their squeaky clean, precious little boy. He's accepted his grim, cruel fate, and has resigned to trudging through the next two months with only minor complaining; but then, he meets his effortlessly charming, frustratingly handsome, and totally locked in the closet roommate, Tom Partridge.
But as the camp goes on, Rory learns that maybe he judged Tom too early; and maybe, just maybe, he wouldn't have to be as miserable here as he thought.
[Set in 1979 Plano, Texas. Lots of references to the southern gay community, 60s-70s bands and music, & the counterculture at the time. Discussions about gender roles, stereotypes within queer identities, internalized homophobia, trans people's (& especially trans women) suicide rates, PTSD, Vietnam War, and suicide triggered by PTSD related events.]
