When Kamille returns to her hometown six years after her sister's tragic death, she is greeted by a torrent of unpleasant facts:

1) Her childhood home is being sold.

2) The job she had lined up falls through.

3) She must take care of her injured mother.

4) The town is planning to demolish her sister's favorite park.

On a whim, she purchases the property to save it from demolition--the only stipulation is that she must revitalize the park in three month's time, or it will be repossessed by the city. But things don't go as planned when Wesley Biltmore, Kamille's highschool ex-boyfriend, shows up--to help, or to hinder?

Faced with a project bigger than she can fathom, and a heart full of rage, Kamille tries to keep her sister's memory alive the only way she can, and learns that the earth doesn't stop turning and the sun doesn't wink out, even when it feels like our entire world ends.

What I got was something different. The beautiful descriptions of the beach town made me feel warm and cozy and kept me reading until these two characters were introduced. I thought their meeting was innocent and sweet, not what I was expecting. It was really good." - CourtneyPeterman0

In the second book following "How it was Left" - By the summer before their junior year, Zooey proposes a promise that she and Lila won't let anything stop them from moving on from Borne to pave their own ways for themselves, even if those paths send them to separate places. But when Lila's boyfriend Michael dies tragically at the end of their senior year, those separate places the girls end up in leave Lila remaining in Borne while Zooey heads off for college in Chicago. Not only are the two separate from each other geographically, but through hidden secrets both have vowed to keep from each other about the terrible night of Michael's death. Five years later, Zooey has returned to Borne after finishing school, but unfortunately, experiences in her past 5 years of life have forced their way home with her. Zooey's arrival back into town leaves Lila feeling much of the same.
