Both of them weren't human, one was a time lord the other being half Time Lord and half... what ever her species was. But meeting on Gallifrey for the first time, when they were very young was enough for the Doctor to fall in love with the winged girl. But when the time war came, she and her parents fled to their home planet which they didn't know would soon be gone.
