Hayden Lovelace can't think. Her brain is always far away, even without the illegal pills she takes. Things that normally should be associated with each other are not. Connections aren't made. Her mind is faded, no matter if she's on drugs or not. The pills help her calm down when her parents fight, when she has horrible flashbacks that involved the boy that did not want to be saved, or when she saw Finn, a boy she was hopelessly in love with but has distanced himself from her. When Rowan Parker moves back into town after spending months with an aunt, Hayden is shocked to see the difference. Gone is the hurt, abused boy that she had saved before he left. Here was an attractive, sweet mysterious boy that would knock her off her feet. But when she heard the shots inside her school, she discovers that the outside might look different, but that does not mean the inside is. She learns that unhealed, untreated trauma that is brought to the surface could make a person lose all their progress. She learns that maybe, just maybe, if she had woken up long enough to see the signs, this wouldn't have happened. This story is about a girl with an empty soul and a foggy brain. A broken bullied boy. They share a past that will bind them together forever-after all, she's the reason he's still alive today. But he didn't want to stay alive. And he wants revenge.
