Clara is an adventurer. Every day, she walks into her caves, exploring, finding new tunnels every day, always singing with her canary Roxy, and her echo. What happens when she one day wanders in too far? What secrets are lucking in the shadows? And who is her echo really?

                                            ──────────────────────────────

As she walked, she looked around. Clara had gone too far in. Her canary, Roxy, tweeted in fear. Even she knew they had traveled too far. Clara didn't mind. She enjoyed any and all adventure. Even if all the tunnels looked exactly the same... Dodging a stalagmite and then ducking down to avoid a stalactite, Clara kept singing. She kept intoning, even as she realized she was lost, but then suddenly, her echo wasn't obeying her. She froze, lips unmoving but lyrics continuing. A prick of fear began to swallow her, and questions started popping in her head. Who was there? Why were they there? Why had they been repeating her lyrics? How long had this mysterious person been in here, repeating her lyrics? How were they in here? How long had they been here? The questions bottled up inside her until she could only squeak out one frightened word. "Hello?"

Wren's life is about to change forever - but not how she expects it to. Kidnapped on her wedding day, she finds herself trapped in a mountain cave, unable to return home with no company outside of the inhuman creature that took her. *** "Wait, Wren! Not that way!" It was darker here and panic limited her vision, but she could see it reaching for her; its wings like two huge looming shadows behind it. "Get away! Don't touch me! No, let me go!" She shrieked. She screamed in earnest as a hand took hold of her arm, and then even more when her own hand reached for something to hang onto and grasped at empty air. She had been scrambling towards a sudden drop! The hands hauled her back, but she still struggled. She didn't want to look at it, and she still wasn't sure she wouldn't rather take her chances with the open air instead. "Stop it, I'm not going to hurt you! You'll hit your head on the rock or something. Wren, please!" It knew her name. Somehow it knew her. She was going to die! "Let me go! Stop touching me!" She was sitting on the rocky floor now with her back against an uneven wall, and it was trying to pin her down and hold her still. She kept her eyes turned away and struggled helplessly, but it was no use. It was strong like a human man too, and she couldn't keep it off of her. The wings had moved until they curved around them both and shut out a lot of the light. Its face was so near hers that she could feel its breath brushing against her skin. "Please just look at me for a second. Just look. I'm not going to hurt you." One of the hands grabbed her chin and forced her head to turn, and then she was looking straight into a pair of dark brown eyes. It had a human face too. She had been expecting something monstrous or ghastly, and the surprise made her falter for a moment. He looked young, with a bad haircut and an earnest expression on his face. "I'll let go of you, okay? Just don't lunge around like that anymore, you'll get hurt." He whispered.

When you experience the worst thing you could ever imagine, how do you react? - "The water looked so tempting under me as I stood there in the dark. The splashing sounds as the waves hit the stone calmed me down and I took a deep breath. Yes. This was it. I closed my eyes and took one step closer, feeling the curb under the soles of my shoes when I stopped again. Then my heart started pounding when I heard the sound of an angry engine behind me, a screech and a crash. I turned around, gasping, ready to pick my phone up from the ground to call for help- but what met me was a pair of soul-searching golden eyes. In all his twisted glory, he stood in front of me, his precious motorcycle's engine still going as it laid on the ground behind him. I force my feet, my bare, cool feet to cooperate and ground myself on this unfamiliar turf. My eyes rove over thin, frivolous grey boots. Suddenly the flashback hits me. So many unbearable nights unravel before me like a roll of film. I am in the little house. The wind howls and the door creaks and I sleep on the cold, hard floor. My mother lies in the bed just above me. Creak... thump... creak... thunk... thunk... crunch... crack... crunch, crack, crunch! My eyes open and rove over a familiar cottage from another lifetime. My mother jumps to her feet as the door shatters and the raiders rove in. The witch throws a splattering potion that burns me and shatters my mother as though she were the door. The zombies follow. "Run!" Mom's voice echoes. "RUN..." The jump through the void has left them shattered, defenseless, and alone. Can Esse, or S, hero of The Overworld and Warrior of Minecraftia make it through a new, scary reality where she has to start over from scratch, and can she handle the earth-shattering truth and overcome her crucial flaw before it's too late? Will they ever be reunited, or is S destined to be alone again forever? This story was previously published as Through The Void.
