The reason behind this was because both Candice and Jane had a gift that ran in their family and it was the gift to communicate with the dead, they could see ghosts of the people who had passed away and they could communicate to them and it began too much for Jane's father and caused him to leave them and go back to living where he was from in King's County. It was hard for Jane because she loved her father more than anything but he still saw her on some weekends when he wasn't working, Jane was getting ready to go and see her father when everything changed and people began attacking each other.
