In an alternate earth, where human civilization has been bolstered and stabilized by the supernatural packs that control the civilized parts of the world, the small town of Deep Canyon controls the large swath of territory in the southern part of the continent that humans once knew as North America. Established by the heir of the Stoneweaver pack as an alternative to the toxic, patriarchal pack systems once espoused by humans and supernaturals alike, the town is a haven for building relationships between the remaining human civilizations and the supernaturals who play by the rules of equality and respect for all.

Kline Stillwater and Mackai Stoneweaver have been searching an individual foretold by the Stillwater witches when they were young, their third mate. The two men bide their time in their open, bisexual relationship, with the faith that one day that person will arrive.

Doctor Liz Vincent has travelled the world, providing medical care to human communities struggling the aftereffects of wars that saw human civilization topple. Recovering from the wounds of her last mission across the world, Liz is undertaking a cross-continent bike trip to settle her heart and mind, barely cognizant of whose territories she's riding through.

Only a few miles outside of Deep Canyon, Liz finds herself losing a game of chicken with coyotes. When Liz arrives at his mechanic shop, Kline recognizes the person he and Mackai have been waiting for, but past scars on all sides may be more than any of them are prepared to battle through.
