So, this is set during the Maze Runner (the movie) just after Chuck dies, where the Gladers are in the helicopter and getting taken away. I saw a missed Newtmas opportunity in that scene and decided to take advantage of that.

Not all of it, but some of it. I've decided to revisit my original first story and make it better.
