Ophelia Anderson was sick of being told she couldn't do something, especially when the reasons holding her back were out of her control. She wanted nothing more than to reach the pinnacle of motorsport. Unfortunately, her gender had been a key factor in many rejections. No-one wanted to race a woman on their team, blinded by the outdated idea that motor racing was a 'man's sport'. She knew she had to come up with a solution. You see, Ophelia had this determination inside of her, driving her to go to any extreme in order to achieve her dream. The rush she felt when driving on the limit was too powerful. It was a rather simple solution in her mind - people won't judge you for your gender if they don't know it, and thus 'The Phantom' was created. She couldn't be blamed for their assumptions that she was a man and she had zero intention of correcting them until she was one hundred percent certain that she could prove their doubts wrong. To do that, she knew she had to make it big - she had to win in Formula One.
• Main theme and idea inspired by my F1 fan fiction series, Lights Out, which features real teams and drivers. This book is fiction and any similarities to real people is entirely coincidental. BOOK 1 Alyssa has been racing under a fake persona for most of her sporting career after becoming sick of the constant dismissal of her talent because of her gender. Gender clearly didn't play a role in driving ability. In her debut season in Formula 2 in 2018 with ART, she finished a single point behind the championship winner, Nick de Vries. She only seemed to improve and managed to beat her teammate, Robert Schwartzman, for the championship in her second year. Despite this, she refused to take off her helmet and reveal her identity to the world. If it hadn't been for Force India spotting her and recommending the young girl, despite her gender, to be a part of a dominant F2 team, Alyssa would never have made it all the way into F1. The pink team, who were successfully clawing back after a dip in performance, liked to gamble; it was certainly a risk when they decided to promote Alyssa up into F1 as a replacement for Sergio Perez. The Brit was only eighteen years old when Force India told her about Checo's retirement, and how she was to be his replacement. Her ability to maintain her F2 champion status despite filling in for him in the F1 seat on two occasions was a main motivator for the decision. They were aware of her struggles to make it as far as she had done so respected her wishes to keep the helmet on and her identity hidden. It brought them more sponsors than Esteban Ocon, and therefore more money to improve the car - why would they complain? For Alyssa, this was a real chance to prove herself. A woman can and will make it big in a male-dominated sport. But will it pay off when it's lights out?
