Dotty Kavanah grew up in the Van Der Linde gang.  This gang was her family.  Arthur and John were practically her brothers, Dutch and Hosea were basically her fathers.  Everyone was a close friend, and she would put anything on the line for them.  When a heist goes terribly wrong, sending the gang scrambling for their lives and the money to escape, she worries that her family will fall apart around her.  So, as Pinkertons swarm, as tensions run high, as a rat scurries in, and as dangerous decisions are made, she fights to keep everyone together, and she fights to keep everyone alive.
