After The Dissolve and the death of the Neighbors, humans had no hope beyond colonization on Mars. The terraforming had begun a century before and the last piece to the puzzle was the construction of a magnetosphere. They traveled the long distance and lost three vessels in the process, losing vital components of their magnetosphere equipment.
When they arrived on Mars, quickly the human bodies deteriorated in the turbulent atmosphere. The passengers could not stay united. They broke into faction and warred with one another while they awaited their deaths. Then, three years later, the missing ships arrive. Fully fueled. Completely in-tact. No loss of resources.
It was the ultimate miracle, but aboard those wondrous ships was a familiar entity beyond the scope of comprehension.
