Writing in a diary wasn't something that had ever appealed to Regulus; even the thought of writing down his every feeling like that brought about some embarrassment. But he was going to dwell on those thoughts all night regardless, so he decided in the end that there was no harm in at least attempting to purge them by committing them to paper first. The tip of his quill lingered in the cobalt ink for a moment before he made the first mark. 

A second passed, and Regulus watched in surprise as something new appeared in the diary, dark and cramped cursive words replacing his own.

Let's rewind... It's 1976 and Regulus is returning for his fifth year at Hogwarts. With one of the worst summers of his life behind him, he's slightly glad to be back at the castle. His chest felt like it was being ripped out, his throat being scratched violently by the attack of petals climbing up. His coughing got louder and more violent before finally a handful of sunflowers fell into Regulus' hand. James stared down at him, an unknown expression on his face but Regulus didn't have time to study him. He tried to hide the petals but he knew he was to late. James had already seen them, and he could see the obvious splatter of blood on his chin. "What the fuck just happened? Are those sunflowers?" James once again tried to reach out to him, going for his hands, wanting to get a closer look, but Regulus snatched his hands away and took a few more steps back. "You- you didn't see that, do you hear me? You didn't see it" And before he knew it, he was already at the bottom of the astronomy tower stairs, leaving James standing in the middle of the tower.
