There had always been four clans in the forest of the Warrior Cats; TaigaClan (ThunderClan), EskerClan (WindClan), LochClan (RiverClan), and MireClan (ShadowClan). One day a clan-sized group smushes themselves into MireClan camp. They call themselves SkullClan, and their goal is to 'take over' all four clans. They made it clear as they attacked MireClan and took over.
