I almost ended up in prison.

One stupid decision-trying to sell drugs just to make ends meet-and I was caught. I remember my heart pounding, my hands shaking, thinking this is it. But then, out of nowhere, this stranger stepped in. Said a few things to the right people, pulled some strings... and just like that, I was free. Sort of.

Turns out, he's a detective. Not just any detective-one with an agenda. He said he saw something in me. Maybe potential. Maybe desperation. Either way, he offered me a deal: I stay out of jail, but I owe him. Big time.

Now I live in a fancy house that's not mine, taking care of someone I can't decide if I hate or pity. He's a grown man but acts like a spoiled child-rich, reckless, always testing my patience. My actual job? Keep an eye on him. Report back. Make sure he doesn't do something stupid. Or illegal. Or both.

I traded bars for golden cages.
But somehow, I think the real mess is only just beginning.

In this enigmatic world where intentions remain concealed, people find themselves tricked and bewildered, compelled to yield. For truth resides not in explicit words, but in actions lost, a web of deception woven, at quite a cost and things aren't always said plainly, which can lead to confusion and trickery. Similar to the fundamental rule of a course I took in college: "never assume unless otherwise stated." I always do the math, I tread with caution, never risking in vain. Calculations made in mind and hands, devoid of wanton strain. I never believe empty promises, and I never put a value on deeds or efforts unless someone explicitly tells me to. I never risk something I know won't pay off. Yet, amidst this labyrinth of deceit, I made a choice to believe in him. I opted to believe him in this treacherous environment. I trusted his unspoken words, his actions' voice. I dared to face uncertainty, embracing the unknown, For the chance of deceit may be high, but trust had to be sown. In a world where certainty falters, I dared to challenge certainty. Believing in his unexpressed truths, I forged a daring path, embracing the light, the challenge of comprehending the inexplicable, even when faced with perplexing actions and the absence of explicit words. I take the arduous route, choosing faith and unwavering determination, in lieu of the deceptive allure that surrounds me. For, despite the treacherous odds, my heart dares to anchor itself to his unspoken language, ever yearning for the clarity my soul craves.

Prologue I've always believed that silence was safety. Silence doesn't betray. It doesn't scream when you flinch. It doesn't ask why you can't be touched, or why your hands shake when someone comes too close. For years, it was just me and Lola in this house. Our little world-quiet, tucked away, untouched. Safe. I knew the rules. Don't talk to strangers. Don't trust anyone. Don't go out. Don't let the past find you. And I followed them. Faithfully. Until he came. A man with cold and mysterious eyes. A man with warm hands he never offered. A man who looked at me like he'd seen me break-and still stayed. He didn't belong. Not in my world of closed windows and muted voices. Not with the shadows I kept locked behind my ribs. But he moved in anyway. Without warning. Without permission. And when I tried to ask why-Lola just smiled. "For your protection," she said. I told myself not to care. I told myself he'd leave eventually. That whatever arrangement he had with Lola wasn't my business. But curiosity has a way of gnawing at silence. And one quiet afternoon-when I went to clean Lola's room before she came home from her trip- I found something. Hidden behind old bills in a rusted tin box I had no right to open. Inside it, a paper that made the world tilt sideways. Lola's medical records. Dates. Diagnoses. Proof that she was sick. That she'd been hiding it. And beneath it all- A thick, yellowing envelope with my full name on it. Certificate of Marriage His name. My name. And a date I don't remember. I never wore a dress. Never walked down an aisle. Never said "I do." But the signature at the bottom was mine. And the man I was supposedly married to- Was the stranger I'd spent the last few weeks trying to push out of my house. A stranger who, somehow... was already mine?
