The Shadower has no emotions. At least, not anymore. Not since she swore to cut herself off from them forever.
After being raised in a harsh orphanage, a girl named Melany is stolen away by the dark sorceress Evena, who nobody dares even speak of. At the cost of her ability to speak, Melany gets the witch to agree to teach her her sorcerer's ways. Then mute, she learns how to use magic, and how to take vengeance without remorse.
But after her own carelessness and hate towards the village she was raised in brings the worst kind of punishment down upon her mentor, Melany swears never to give in to her emotions again.
Putting a mask around her heart, and another on her face to hide her brutal scarring, she changes her name to the Shadower. She becomes an assassin of the darkness, completely bent on fulfilling the mission Evena had given her before her demise.
All her plots are going according to plan until two wanderers enter the forest, utterly unafraid of her and strangely... familiar. Normally she kills anyone who gets in her way, but she cannot this time. For not only is she certain that she knew them in the past, but they also offer a way for her to get her voice back.
So when the wanderers ask her to take them back to the village through the treacherous woods, she agrees. But as they trek through the forest, her mask slowly starts to slip as they treat her with far more kindness than she deserves.
And the powerful, wicked Shadower has to make a choice. Either to carry out her mentor's will, and remain strong, or give into her emotions, which doomed her last time. But she cannot do both. And as her eyes are opened further, she slowly learns that all she believes in is a lie.
