Alex had a rough start.
Being born in the back of a moving van while illegally crossing the boarder isn't always the easiest way to come into the world.
Add on top of it that the truck was found and everyone else was killed, and you could say he had a "rough start."
The boarder patrol officer adopted him.

The boarder patrol's future wife makes sure of that.
Neglected from the start, Alex doesn't know what to do with himself. He's depressed, schizophrenic, and borderline sociopath.
His life isn't falling apart, because there was nothing there to crumble.
He has friends. They're the only reason he's holding on.
