A year has passed since the events of the first book.

Things appear to be looking up for Waverly, that is until Judson experiences a life-threatening fever that literally burns him up. HalfHyde and Waverly seek the help of a Dwarven healer in the next town and it is revealed that a greater force is at work because Judson's heart was split in half by an unnamed god during his childhood. 

They are told that the only way to heal Judson is to bring him to his home realm of Dakriton. Again, Waverly sets out on another journey to save her best friend but this proves a lot tougher than she expected.
