Feathered Fur

A unknown disease spread where babies started being born with animal like attributes(wings, beaks, ears, tails, forked tongues, etc.) It began to develop further when the children grew older, these hybrids became able to shift into their animal counterparts. Along with kids describing a presence in their mind that could communicate with them and sometimes take control of their body, more specifically when strong emotions were present.
50 years after this break out of hybrids, when the "disease" has been studied more, two more hybrids were born two days apart. A baby with a fluffy tail and a baby with nubbed wings.
Another 17 years go by and these two animals are brought together after one gets into too many fist fights and has to move. The School of Predators is where both find each other roomed together for their senior year of high school.
