Vaporpaw has always been a good cat, but her hallucinations have sometimes caused her to mess up in her training, pushing her back behind the other apprentices. When Vaporpaw begins having hallucinations about a mysterious shadow cat, she grows terrified. The cat constantly appears in the edge of her vision and never leaves her alone. Desperate to get answers, Vaporpaw asks it what it wants, not expecting an answer, leaving her shocked when it does.

Vaporpaw realizes this may not just be a hallucination, but a warning from StarClan. When she warns her Clanmates, no one believes her. They all assume it's just another hallucination of hers and nothing more. Some even believe she's insane and send her to the medicine den. Now trapped under the watchful eyes of her medicine cat, Vaporpaw has no way to warn her Clanmates of the horrors to come . . .
