The old leader of ThunderClan has died and Mottlesplash, the loyal and experienced deputy, needs to step into the role of leader. However, when Mottlesplash makes the journey to receive his nine lives from StarClan, he is met with an unexpected and devastating refusal. Instead, StarClan names Swiftshadow, a seemingly lazy and careless tom, as the rightful leader of ThunderClan.

Confusion and jealousy cloud Mottlesplash's heart as he grapples with the shocking revelation. Unable to accept StarClan's decision, he returns to ThunderClan and hides the truth, continuing to act as leader while keeping Swiftshadow in the dark about his destined role.
