Freed was also in love with Laxus, has been for years, yet everyone keeps asking when the Lightning Dragon Slayer is going to get with Mirajane. Not only does that piss Freed off, but he can't just declare his love for the handsome young man because Laxus is so much more attractive and would reject, and probably bully, him and make him leave the Thunder Legion.
