A thousand years ago, saintess Theresa and her party of loyal friends--Armon the guardian, Vaeril the wise, and Isupel the quick--banded together to defeat the demon king, ushering forth an era of peace. The saintess and the guardian were happily married as king and queen; everyone lived happily ever after. At least, that's how the stories go. Ossaru Gholdei is no protector. As a run away bone-elf wage slave in debt to a back-alley enchanter, he can barely afford to make rent, much less worry about anyone else. Yet, when the legendary sword of justice appears before him, it becomes clear that he will be called upon to become one anyway. With memories of his past life as a hero surfacing, and allies appearing in the most inconvenient places, it becomes clear that the old stories are no where close to the truth. Besides, Ossaru was born into a far worse position in this life than he was in his last. Even as he falls in love with the incarnation of the saintess once again, Ossaru is reluctant to protect the society that abandoned him. Will he accept his destiny, or let the world burn? Even Lagrasse has always known that he is the reincarnation of the saintess Theresa. Not everyone has always believed him about that, but his knowledge of ancient history is beyond what can be found in sacred texts and he's always been excited to help anyone he can. But, not everything about being a chosen one for the new age is good. Expectations mount as Even gets older and the screaming urge to escape the weight of the world gets harder to shove away. Also, as Even gets to know Ossaru and the other hero's incarnations, he realizes that the memories he's always relied upon to understand the world are selected and incomplete. With crumbling faith in his own identity, Even is caught between his urge to help people and his wish to be free for once in his life. They're going to need to figure it out soon, because the heroes aren't the only ones who have reincarnated.
