Against all odds, 16-year-old Aerie gets chosen to train as a soldier for the male-dominated Division tasked with the defense of Earth - at least what's left of it after climate change left the landscape scorched and its people broken.
The initiation is grueling and the pressure is on when she learns that failure will result in death. To make matters worse, the majority of Aerie's competitors have little respect for her, set on the belief that most women don't survive the initiation, let alone pass it. But Aerie is determined to live, and her fellow competitor Rhys realizes that with extra training she has not only the potential to pass, but excel.
The two team up based on the idea of strength in numbers - and maybe something more - but they soon realize that merely passing won't cut it.
