Against all odds, 16-year-old Aerie gets chosen to train as a soldier for the male-dominated Division tasked with the defense of Earth - at least what's left of it after climate change left the landscape scorched and its people broken. The initiation is grueling and the pressure is on when she learns that failure will result in death. To make matters worse, the majority of Aerie's competitors have little respect for her, set on the belief that most women don't survive the initiation, let alone pass it. But Aerie is determined to live, and her fellow competitor Rhys realizes that with extra training she has not only the potential to pass, but excel. The two team up based on the idea of strength in numbers - and maybe something more - but they soon realize that merely passing won't cut it. Their efforts are dwarfed by something far more sinister, a conspiracy that will affect not just themselves, but the lives of every person left on their godforsaken planet.

Eve Hammond, her best friends Lance Morgan and Alison Murphy, and her on and off-again boyfriend Amari Walker have spent the last four years enjoying college and everything it has to offer. Dealing with the ups and downs and trying in their own ways to remain together and intact as their future approaches. But Eve has always had a secret, as these four years were a break allowed by her father, who carries his own secrets and doesn't let her forget the reasons for her upbringing. Suffering from visions that can leave her frozen, Eve struggles as their final semester begins, and the visions become more frequent and less typical in experience, as if something or someone is reaching out to her from a world unknown. Little does she or the others know, they live in her mind as a place to keep her hidden from dangers in the real world, dangers like a dark figure hunting her and her family or Gregory Pheonix. The First Human and leader of the United Human Republics that wants her for reasons, not in line with his own peoples' beliefs. As the effects of the visions become stronger and her father loses his own strength, a plan is hatched to bring her to safety between him and her mother, ending her time in the world she has grown up in. With many characters noticing this shift, the world beyond the realm of her mind begins to heat up with a buzz that will usher in her arrival into reality. An arrival that she and her friends will sooner rather than later have no choice but to accept and must prepare for the consequences of their soon-to-be new reality. She might have been trained for this, but she will learn soon enough that she was the weapon she was learning to wield all along.
