During his time in the arena, Haymitch was able to survive, winning the games through wit. He finally is able to go home, but his little "stunt" at the end didn't go unnoticed by President Snow. No one can make a mockery of the Capitol without consequence.

I shut my eyes tight trying to ignore the flood of tears streaming down my face.
