He has the choice to either stay at Midtown where he gets bullied and is always bored out of his mind or go to an highschool that will finally give him challenge. The thing is if he accepts he'll be in 10th grade, two grades above his age. With 16 years old! (But you know he accepted.)

But when they learn that a new student will be attending the school in their grade they are surprised, because no one gets in the school unless they have powers or smarts or anything like that. They were curious.
