Eric is your everyday medic on a spaceship deep in space. He's overworked and stressed. Harold pushes his work on him constantly, even though he has no offical mechanic training. While fixing a light (that Harold was really supposed to fix) all power shut off. Eric wasn't surprised, he had expected this. The ship needed a software update and they'd be stuck there a while. So he continued to fix the light, using a flashlight. But what happens when the update doesn't only improve the software by making it smarter and faster, but also gives it emotions and control over its own actions? And what happens when all the androids on the ship that where supposed to be mildless puppets suddenly gain sentience?

This story was inspired by Crystalscherer's A Starship Called Starsong. I am using most of their world building, and even working in some minor character ideas into my characters. I have not yet read their entire story, but the first few chapters really inspired me and I wanted to start writing this before I lost that inspiration.

Elodie's life changes at the turn of a doorknob when she is forced into joining a secret organization that claims to be protecting the Earth from aliens. But with every step she takes, she finds the organization, or the facility, as they call it, becoming more and more suspicious. When a mysterious death occurs, revealing a well-concealed secret, things quickly go downhill as humanity's future is placed on the shoulders of a single gaggle of teenagers. *** I hear a sigh from the other side of the door, "Miss. Chaucer, you have a wonderful opportunity here, are you going to take it or not?" Now, I am seriously confused, "Opportunity?" She takes advantage of my befuddled state and shoves the door open. Shit. The corners of her mouth pull up, and it's so unnatural, it takes me a moment to realize she's smiling. Major plastic surgery? Probably. Click. Did she just lock the door? She locked the door! I spring towards the house phone, dusty from years of doing absolutely nothing, so I can call the police. I don't make it. Halfway there, I trip on my own pant-leg and face plant on the floor. The woman steps over me and retrieves the phone. She looks at it as if it's a foreign object, "This won't be necessary. All I want to do is talk to you." For some reason, instead of screaming, I stay silent. She smiles and pulls out a chair from the kitchen table for me to sit on. When I don't sit, she says, "If you want to know what's going on, then sit." I think about it for a moment. She hasn't hurt me yet, and I have to admit, I am quite curious as to what's going on. So, call me stupid, but I sit down. "I am from a space organization that protects civilians from . . . outside threats." *** Beautiful cover made by @mahana258! Computer updates are simple, right? Apparently, that's not always the case when it involves a Spaceship's AI in the middle of deep space. We have always relied upon technology to travel through space, but sometimes that very same technology has a mind of its own... (This story has a happy ending) -------- Sneak Peek: A flashing orange light in the top corner of my handheld device prompted me to check the system status page. My jaw dropped. All sorts of systems were going offline. Water, sewage, air, heating, cooling, weapons, and many more. What was going on? The Overseer was more decisive than I was. "Go help get the air systems back online. We can eat dry rations for two weeks, but we can't hold our breath for that long." I took off running once more. I hadn't gone far when I almost ran right into Logan. I asked, "What going on?" He grabbed my shoulders urgently. "The main computer's AI is taking over the entire ship. I need to get to a backup mainframe to try and reverse the upgrade, but I can't find the room! The AI messed up the electronic maps, and I have never been to this one before! Where is the Delta access room?!" My mind tried to wrap itself around the details as I gave directions, "...then turn left and it's by the plumbing room on that level." "Thanks!" He took off running. ------- Please note there is no romance in this story. :) A huge thank you to @JimenaVivancoo for making the cover! Copyright April 2018. All Rights Reserved. WATTY 2019 WINNER Hale, a state of the art android, can do nearly anything a human can. He cooks meals, cleans and organizes the house, repairs broken appliances, and runs errands. He can even provide for the more carnal needs of his owner. None of these tasks should present any challenge for Hale, and they don't-until he meets his next door neighbour, Rayner. Rayner seems like an unassuming gardener, but he asks Hale a lot of questions. Does Hale wish he could smell or taste food? What would he look like if his appearance hadn't been chosen for him? From the moment they meet, Hale runs into errors in otherwise simple tasks. He experiences bizarre sensations that none of his diagnostic tools can explain, and struggles to appease the people in his owner's social circle. As the errors in his programming begin to wear on his owner's patience, Hale faces the most difficult decision yet. If he can't evolve to meet her needs, he'll be returned and recycled into parts for future androids. If he does evolve, is he still just an android? Or something more? In all this, Rayner is the only man who can help him, and Rayner only has one question left for Hale. What does he want? Hale wasn't designed to want anything, but perhaps he can find the answer in the man with all the questions. [Complete] Stealing stuff is supposed to be simple. But when I decide to rescue a ComfortUnit from a company that I faked my own death to escape, and they're hauling "pesticides" that don't seem to have much agricultural value, things get a lot more complicated. Add to that, there are still humans around to get hurt by corporate paranoia/ secrecy/ vindictiveness, and things are...well, yeah. This is going to be a lot. ___ From the perspective of an original SecUnit character named Nine (because I'm sensitive to "Murderbot would not say that"). ___ Content warnings: - Strong language (swearing) - Canon-typical violence - Serious injuries - Disfigurement or non-consensual body modification (occurs off-page, discussed) - Minor character death - Blood and gore - Fire - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) - Chemical Weapons ___ Other tags: - The Corporation Rim is Terrible - Corporate Espionage - no beta we die like murderbots - Heist Silly tags: - Unreliable narrator(s) but only because of the brain damage - If sarcasm were rocket fuel we could be an intergalactic civilization by now - Hurt/ComfortUnit, or HurtUnit/ComfortUnit (pun, no romance) - Grumpy-sunshine dynamics but the sunshine person is just as damaged as the grumpy person - If it's unsafe to be yourself, you'll always pretend to be someone else - If you always pretend to be someone else, you'll never know who you are - If you never know who you are, you'll never know what you want ___ Inspired by *Fugitive Telemetry*: "I started to say that they never used SecUnits for espionage, and then I realized I didn't actually know that for sure. Take away our armor and alter our appearance and give us the right module..." ___ Cover created in Canva. Both images are called "Modern technology icon" by iconsy.

If they are made in our image, surely they will suffer the same trials? In 2078, sentient androids help rebuild a damaged world. Eli, a unique android, struggles to find his place in a world that both fears and covets him as he becomes entangled in a dangerous game of politics and rebellion. Ten years prior, Dr. Randeep Singh races against time to prevent an impending disaster while balancing the demands of a ruthless dictator. As the two timelines collide, Eli and Dr. Randeep Singh are forced to confront their vulnerabilities and limitations in the face of overwhelming challenges. Early Reviews: "Your characterisation of your main cast was expertly done, but the Board wanted to highlight Eli, whose near childlike wonder at his own existence and other life rather paradoxically creates a sense of hope and beauty in the face of such instability." "I was very pleased with the intriguing plot, which was well-conceived and developed, alongside a most fascinating cast of characters. I believe your story is very well-structured and well-grounded allowing the story to build progressively and weave together the underlying messages included in your work, including concepts of control and existence, as well as uncontrolled scientific exploration that are sure to resonate with many contemporary readers" This is not 'man vs machine' - 'Therefore I Am' delves into ethics of class systems as sentient androids are introduced into a brutal world scorched by a world war and ran by a sadistic regime. Narrated over two timelines, this novel is a real page-turner and a hot take on robotic AI. Although this story discusses AI themes; no AI was used in the creation or in the writing process. I wanted this book available to read for free but if you wish to support me you can buy this book in paperback on Amazon in most territories. Search: Mickey Luke Mitchell - Therefore I Am at a very reasonable price.

Tears threatened to spill out from my eyes as I looked at my reflection in the mirror. DEVASTATED and BETRAYED. Suddenly, the door of the room opened and slammed shut. I looked at his reflection from the mirror and wiped off my tears hurriedly before shoving the card inside one of the drawers, not wanting him to know about it. He came and hugged me from behind resting his chin on my shoulder. Reality dawned upon me and fear crawled up on each and every ounce of my skin. Sweat buds formed on my forehead and neck as I looked at him staring at me intensely from the mirror. His gaze was filled with desire. He turned me towards him by holding my waist gently and sealed our lips in a soft and gentle kiss. I closed my eyes trying to hold back my tears which were ready to spill out anytime feeling disgusted with his touch. At that moment of helplessness, all I was praying to God was 'please god let it be a dream where I'll wake up beside the love of my life, my Rann' but the saddest reality is it's not. "My Rann is a ruthless killer. He is a Devil with whom I got married."

Time flies by when you're sleeping

4 parts Complete

A massive alien ship and a human in a small pod, in cryogenic sleep, thousands of light-years away from earth. What could go wrong and how will he get back to earth? -------------------------------------- Notes: I felt tired one day and thought that I could use a long nap. This story is a result of that thought. I didn't use any movies or series for inspiration, the story is my original work. This is just the result of my weird imagination and brain thinking about what that character would do and telling me what to write. I hope you like it :) It's just a story, like all of my other stores. It doesn't have a deeper spiritual, moral or ethical meaning.
