"I lay with my head on my desk, staring at the empty one beside me. I'm glad that my peers know well enough to not try to talk to me. I do not have the mental capacity to handle that right now. Because it's the first day, we stay in homeroom for about an hour to deal with schedules, handbooks, paperwork etc. Everything is going as well as it possibly can considering the circumstances. Or so I thought. Twenty minutes after the bell rings, enters a boy." ******************************** High school senior, Sloane Spencer, is having an extremely difficult time dealing with the grief of losing her best friend, Scarlett, to a tragic incident over the summer. The more she goes over it in her head, the more she blames herself, pushing her closer and closer to the edge. The secrets she's keeping about the circumstances of Scarlett's death are eating her alive. It's the first day of school and Sloane is expecting a very lonely year, as she has mentally prepared herself as best she can, to see an empty desk and locker next to hers this school year. That is until new kid, Peter Townsend, from Boston, plops down in what used to be Scarlett's desk, blissfully ignorant about who's desk he's sitting at. Peter, also feeling pretty alone in the world, has a secret that he's keeping as well. What secrets are they hiding? Through each other, will they find the hope and healing that they so desperately need?

"Just please?" I ask her, "please, there's one for you too, but you can't read it till tomorrow." I wrote a total of four letters. One for my mom, Steph, Tamara, and Jeremy. "Here's yours. Just please don't read it till tomorrow." "Okay..." she says as I walk away and get into my car. . . .
