You met Remus Lupin when you came to Hogwarts in your fifth year. The two of you bonded instantly over similar interests, though ever the flirts, James Potter and Sirius Black also had their eyes on you. They assumed they had a chance-- they didn't. 

For the next two years yours and Remus' feelings for one another only grew stronger, until he nervously spilled his feelings for you in a dramatic declaration of love sometime in your sixth year. After that you were inseparable, and apparently only a war could tear you apart. Remus lost everyone in that war. 

All he was left with was a broken heart and a Kneazle-cat he wasn't even sure he wanted. One he couldn't bear to look at anymore.
