Betty Lenore Crowe is an aspiring writer during the Great Depression, though money is the least of her problems right now. In the fictional world of Amberlin City, where crime is a normality, life hasn't been easy for her, especially in a world full of men who think they are superior in every way. Nonetheless, she is determined to prove everyone wrong and achieve the impossible: to be the first woman journalist on the Amberlin City Radio News. However, she gets more than what she bargained for when she goes after a story that should've been left in the ashes of its making.
