My submission for round 1 of the Short Story Challenge for NYC Midnight. I was given the prompt (genre: horror; subject: a detour; character: an airman). With this story I have advanced to round 2!
Pete Summers, an Air Force pilot, shows off his flying skills for his girlfriend while his wife is away. A freak accident leaves him turning to the kindness of strangers who may not be what they seem.

Brady, the bane of her existence- he was insufferable, always cranky, and for some reason hated her before she could even have a real conversation with him. The hatred was mutual, of course- however, the hatred was quick to morph into something different, something more friendly after the two encountered near-death situations. It was something that resembled love- something that was love, and it was so very clearly the one thing that was destined to save them in the end. Scott's a little in love with the new air traffic controller at DFW, as much as he can be for someone he's never seen and who isn't even the right gender for him. She's always professional, but has a sense of fun, and her voice is warm and friendly whenever she's not overstressed. And when she is, or when someone fucks up, she's sassy and sometimes snarky as hell. And okay, maybe it's not really love, but there's a definite girl crush happening, which only seems to grow the more he interacts with her. He's friendly and flirty and happily admires her from afar, and she's just as friendly in response, once she recognizes his voice. Thirteen Points of Light
After a night on the town, Sarah wakes up to a miserable hangover. But it's nothing compared to what comes next. After attempting to light a cigarette, she feels that something isn't quite right. Soon she'll discover that everything is very wrong. My entry in the Open Novella Contest III, Feb 2020. April 28. Just got the news that Thirteen Points has made it through the second round. Now I have to finish by May 5th. I'm not as far along as I had hoped at this point, but I'm sure I can make it. May 4th. 12:10 am. Finished. Submitted. Good night. May 20th. Well, 13 Points made the Long List. I have no idea how many original entries there were but about 940 made the first cut. There's 150 on the Long List. Not bad for my first time out. Now we'll wait and see how we fare on the Short List. May 30th. Well, Sarah and company didn't make the Short List. I can't say I'm disappointed though. "A gift." One guard says to someone else in the room as he leaves. I groan in pain and scrunch myself into a ball, squeezing my eyes shut. "Is it becoming your habit to run away from me?", he says as he has caught up to me and is now walking next to me on my left. I stop and he does the same. Again, I look at him and shake my head. "Lieutenant Commander Johnson with all due respect, but I am trying to hold up the courtesies. First you insist on me walking out before you. Now you are walking on my left side. I am not sure, if you are testing me, trying to get back at me or if you are plain stupid", I tell him, and he grins. Six months ago, Taylor was on a mission that went horribly wrong. She lost three people that were near and dear to her and still has to fight the aftermaths of the incident. When she receives orders to become an instructor in one of the most prestigious fighter and strike tactics programs in the U.S. armed forces, she must face her demons whether she wants to or not.
