Vichy, France, 1940. In October 1940, while the war is continuing in other countries, France and Germany sign a treaty, letting children go back to school. These kids that have to go to school after a long summer of war, earn a nickname from a French writer, "les oiseaux de passage". Oscar is only eight, but he's in love with a girl from his class, Marie. She's pretty like an angel, and she's really smart. She's not popular, like Oscar, but since she decorated her shirt with a six-branched yellow star, kids hate her. The only kid that doesn't care is Oscar. He loves her, he loves his angel. How can a child understand that this yellow star on her uniform shows the world that she's considered "evil" ? How can a child understand that in times of war, every adult keeps their children away from Jewish people, and that Oscar should not stay with Marie ? How can a child understand a lot of things even the adults cannot fully get ?
