The novel begins with a man named Mortis Angelus frequenting a bar, looking for someone to bring home with him. Mortis is revealed to be a fallen angel, now working as a soul collector for the underworld. He is looking to find someone to sleep with when in walks the most beautiful person Mortis has ever let this eyes on.
Kiran Smith, a young person who had the time identified as nonbinary, being stood up at the same bar. For Ki, this is the worst night of their life but for Ki, it is probably the best thing that could happen to him. He plays the charm and finds himself ordering Ki a drink which brings Ki to his table. The two hit it off and in the brief time Mortis is with Ki, he decides that he is in love with her and that she will be coming back to the underworld with him
Through tricks and deception, he tricks Ki into coming back to the void unknowingly. They spend the night and the next day together. When Ki tries to leave without Mortis knowing, the circles right back into the house as if they were walking into it again. They begins to realise something about their host.
