Jessie wondered what their lives would have been like if Dad had been kind and decent. Would she have been different? Unfortunately, Dad wasn't kind or decent, so she would become what he created.

Jessie, a teen-aged old soul, fights to survive her father's physical and emotional abuse. She and her brother Brian, tightly bound by circumstance, try to protect one another. They refuse to bow down to their father's bullshit.

Under intense stress at home, Jessie descends into disassociation and multiple personality disorder with Brian as her witness. As the abuse worsens, her secondary personality, Lena, assumes control with dangerous results. Lena, born in the dark, has special abilities which allow her to deal with Dad or anyone else who would do Jessie harm.

Alarmed by Lena's behavior, Brian tries to keep Jessie's disorder under wraps, but destiny intervenes. When Dad comes home in the middle of the night drunk and confronts Jessie, Lena answers.
