Most stories will tell you that Persephone was a prisoner in her husband's palace. They will say that she was dragged from the world above against her will and could not speak as the God of the Underworld defiled her. They will say that she was an innocent child, and that she was weak. These were the stories Demeter wanted you to believe: stories in which her daughter didn't fall in love with a man doomed to a life of shadows and gloom. That she wasn't happy, nor capable of power ー that she couldn't possibly follow through with what was expected of her as a queen. Demeter would never tell you that her daughter was only a prisoner in the world above, and that Hades had freed her.

Flowers and Shadows
Hades and Persephone is a story that has so many different sides to it. Some people romanticize their relationship (often without taking into account certain aspects of the myth) while others insist that Hades was nothing but perverse and awful... even though taking Persephone, after having her father's permission, was quite normal for the time! This is a retelling of the ancient myth, with all the ancient components to it. I researched the story from many different sources and tried to make it as accurate as possible. The only writer's license was the amount of time she spent in the Underworld before Hermes came-- I never found an exact number, so I wrote it as six months, partly so that they had time to truly fall for each other, partly so that she would return to the mortal realm immediately after being returned to Demeter. Persephone is a character who understands the place goddesses and women have in the world, understands the normalcy of her capture, but still struggles with feeling like it's unjust. Hades is a god with few romantic relationships in his past (Leuce and Minthe) who hadn't fallen for anyone for a while and wasn't quite sure how to treat a goddess in a realm he never visited. We all know the story of how Hades's kidnapped Persephone from her mother and his sister Demeter, brought her to the Underworld and tricked her by eating a Pomegranate that forces her to spend half the year in the Underworld with him. While Persephone may have been reluctant to be with the King of The Underworld at first, she slowly grew to love it and her husband. Hades being the most hated God received a curse from Persephone father, Zeus, that any child Hades and Persephone had together would destroy the world as we know it. Neglecting to tell his young wife this Persephone becomes pregnant. Excited to tell her husband about the news when she gets back to the underworld, her mother let's her know of the curse that Zeus has put on the child. Demeter urges her to be rid of the child, but Persephone, Goddess of Fertility denies the request and hides her pregnancy from all. Once Persephone has the child Zeus and Hades find out, so she asks Athena and Aphrodite for protection of the beautiful little girl.
