“Why do you do what he says?” Jonathan whispered.
She shook her head, growing fearful, “I can’t tell you.”
He reached up and brushed the small bruise forming on her cheek, “Did he do this to you?” he asked her.
Adair shook her head, “N-No.” Her hands shook as she pulled away from him, “I have to go,” she said.
“You just got her, please don’t.” he whispered. He took her hands and squeezed them softly.
She shook her head, “No, I can’t.” she pulled her hands away and turned to run into the forest.
Jonathan followed behind her, “I won’t let you go back. Tell me the truth Adair.”
She turned to look up into his deep brown eyes, “I’m really sorry,” she whispered, “But I can’t. Or you’ll be next.”
She couldn’t kill him, wouldn’t kill him.
He reached out to touch her cheek again and she flinched away.
Frowning deeply, he took a step back and looked down, “I’ll be here waiting, then,” he whispered. “When you’re ready.”
Her heart swelled inside her chest, “Thank you,” she whispered. She stepped closer and wrapped her arms around his chest in a tight hug. He hugged her back softly and pressed a small kiss to her hair.
“Be careful.” He whispered in her ear.
Adair only nodded, because she knew this was a promise she couldn’t keep.
