For their last day together before they split off for college, six high school friends celebrate by playing an old game they found in one of their attics: "Primeval". Upon starting the six-player game, the friends are sucked into the world of "Primeval" and spawned into their character roles. The only way out is to finish the game, and with a typically twelve-hour board game like "Primeval," they know they're in deep. However, there is one catch-if you die in the game, you die in real life.

James is spawned as an elven Mage with incredible magical skill... but the worst health you could imagine.
Megan is spawned as a half-elven, half-human Ranger: a rogue-like warrior known for their usage of bows and arrows... but she is also spawned with the lowest stats of the group.
Riley is spawned as a Warrior with a powerful longsword, but her shorter-than-average height is turned into a cruel joke when she realizes that she has been spawned as a... dwarf.
Kalan is spawned as a human Cavalier, a warrior known for their usage of swords, shields, and skill on horseback... but in the most important stat to a Cavalier, dexterity, she spawned a 1.
Casey is spawned a half-elven, half-human... Berserker. Known for their aura of rage that dominates the battlefield and scares their enemies shitless, Casey, a theatre-kid, is definitely not.
Redd is spawned as a human Rogue, but Rogues are known as stealthy, lithe, and agile... not 6'7" linebackers.

Death was supposed to be the end. For Justin Mikati, it was just the beginning. Crushed under the wheels of a delivery truck, Justin awakens to an impossible offer from an ancient entity known only as The Solver. Reborn in the savage world of Vael'ari as the weakest creature imaginable-a common slime-he discovers that evolution is more than survival. It's conquest. With acidic hunger and an iron will, Kael devours everything in his path. Beasts. Magic. Knowledge. Power. Each kill makes him stronger, each evolution unlocks terrifying new abilities. But when he forms an alliance with Seraphine, a daemon with her own bloody agenda, Kael learns that true strength isn't measured in claws and venom alone. The abandoned goblin ruins of The Hollow become his fortress. Outcasts and monsters flock to his banner, drawn by promises of protection and purpose. But leadership comes with a terrible cost-each follower he names drains his very soul, binding their fate to his in ways that could destroy them all. Word spreads of the slime king rising in the north. Heroes sharpen their blades. Zealots cry for holy war. Ancient powers stir in the deep places of the world, sensing a threat that could reshape the very foundations of Vael'ari. To survive what's coming, Kael must evolve beyond monster, beyond ruler, beyond anything this world has ever seen. In a realm where only the strong survive, can a creature born from nothing claim everything? The Hollow King rises. The world will never be the same. A visceral dark fantasy where every evolution comes at a price, every alliance bleeds, and power is seized one brutal bite at a time. For readers who crave the strategic depth of Overlord with the relentless progression of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime.

In JOS I set the rogue and con-artist Harric against a foil of warriors in a land threatened by magic and civil war. Whenever possible I turn familiar tropes on their heads: instead of a handsome young Lancelot, I cast a broken-down ex-champion addicted to pain-killing herbs; instead of a dashing Squire Brian, the old knight reluctantly takes an ambitious young woman as squire. Similarly, I re-imagine the standard medieval milieu by infusing aspects of two of my favorite historical periods, Elizabethan England, and The American Frontier. Both eras boast a kind of nationalistic arrogance that borders on hubris, and a magnificent spirit of resourcefulness and re-invention that is fun to play with. SERIES The Jack of Souls is first in a series. I am posting parts of the sequel here now (The Knave of Souls), to help me refine the story.

A RANGER IS BORN

11 parts Ongoing

First off, this story was not written by me. I am posting it for a friend of mine, with permission of course. This took place in a Dungeons & Dragons game over 30 years ago. It is a about how one of the player characters got his start; Crentar Bronn. He is a human ranger of 1st level in this story. This is important to note, because it'll bring more perspective as you read the story. I was the DM (Dungeon Master) for this game. At the time, we were still in high school, which of course, gives away our age. lol I decided to have each character do it solo before they actually met up with each other. A teaser so-to-speak. Eventually, there was five player characters in the game. My friend who ran Crentar Bronn remembers this whole solo adventure to this very day in great detail. A few years after the game is when he wrote this story. We were recently reminiscing about 'old times' and he told me that he actually wrote it out as a story. He was then able to find it on an old hard drive & then sent it to me. I was very surprised at how good this is & how great his memory was from that adventure. I'm flattered that he was so inspired by it, that he turned it into a story! I hope you enjoy this early adventure of Crentar Bronn as much as we did. Perhaps, with enough comments & likes, he'll be inspired to write more chapters. THX
