Since she was born, all Andromeda Carafe ever knew was her home in Salem, Massachusetts and her school: Red Anchor Academy for the Complete Education of Silverbloods, code name - the Races.

Being a witch in modern day America wasn't half as dangerous as it had been when her grandmother was learning, back in the 16th century. The country was full of people who claimed to be witches and wizards, but the real thing was still enough to inspire fear. Since the Witch Hunts of the Great Persecution, the Council of Sorcerers had decreed that all witchcraft was to be hidden and kept secret from the world. They were afraid of the very prospect of another Persecution.

Of course, at the Races, witches didn't need to hide. It was a private boarding school in Salem, and admittance was only granted to those who proved magical. It was a place Anne loved, a sanctuary with close friends and good teachers.

Until she got expelled.

Disgraced and disillusioned, Anne is sent to live in Phelan, California, code name - Middle of Nowhere and Far From Home. Her one and only goal: Survive a year in a normal, human school.

She proceeds to spill her drink on the king of the school, find a best friend in a roommate who seems to be too perfect, be the only witch around when magic is used at a football game, and receive a warning that she's being hunted. Anne's just beginning to learn that there is so much more to her world than she ever thought.
