Elizabeth Carter has her whole life planned out. She loves her job, her dog Osbourne, and her quiet smile little life. But when she stumbles into an unfortunate situation one night in the middle of New York City, she can't seem to understand why goodbyes never seem to work anymore. Or why she suddenly wants to drown in a pair of ocean blue eyes.

When sent a final assignment by her psychology professor to study the recent criminal arrests and random mental institution disappearances happening in the city - Carter Mason, a 23 year old psychology major at the University of Georgia, packs up her bags and heads to the city of Atlanta to jump on the case. Determined to earn an A on her final graduate report, Carter finds herself at one of the biggest law firms in Atlanta and the country, Martins, owned by the mysterious, forbidding lawyer Sam Martins. While conducting her research Carter is offered two propositions by Sam Martins himself: money and a session of private interviews, to end her research of the cases. Conflicted with the offer, she blindly accepts. But, as the two spend more time together Carter catches Mr. Martins eye and out of his favor begins to have a relationship with him of only "strictly fucking". As time goes on Carter discovers the real Sam Martins and why she was bribed to end her research to begin with.
