You Can't Always Get What You Want (Rea's Song)
On March 28, 2020, I began a journal as my wife Rea, was nearing a pivotal point in her journey to uncover the underlying cause of some increasingly problematic medical issues. For the most part the text of this book comes directly from that journal. It has been edited as little as possible, mostly to correct typos, improve clarity, make the formatting consistent and remove some items which were copyrighted by people other than me. This account is raw and unfiltered. Rea-pronounced like "area" without the first 'A'-was my soulmate and inseparable partner for almost 27 years. She stood just under 5 feet tall. As her hair greyed in later years she took to highlighting the ends in a dark shade of purple. She was kind, inquisitive, and hard working. She smiled frequently, and cared deeply about her friends, family and the world around her. She loved music, especially live music and until very near the end, all I had to do was play Phish or the Grateful Dead and she would smile and start moving to the music. Her unique name came from her mother who combined a blend of family initials-Roy, her dad, and Ernest and Albert, her maternal uncles. I always believed Rea was one in a million. When you are recruited under JYPE for a soloist position, your neighbours are introduced to you as they go through their journey to debut, although you are only a trainee, the 9 of you are close as if you were in the group with them. For anyone who would like to know, this story is an insert that uses SHE/HER pronouns as that is how I am best at writing, also this was originally a shifting script when it was a draft, but I have adapted it to fit a regular insert story! For the foreseeable future, the story involves the reader having a British accent simply as I haven't changed that part of my DR script, but of course you may ignore the subtle references if it suits you! I have written all (if not most) of this story in draft form and will upload them all either on schedule or all at once in order to not leave the story hanging, so unfortunately reader input will not be used to alter the story! formatting - the story is best read on a phone as I have images to look like 'headers' but of course it is all preference! "I see the world and it seems like I see it so differently than most other people. It makes me really angry most of the time. Especially since no one ever listens to me or what I've got to say. I try to express myself in so many different ways and no one sees it. When I sing a song people will only care about how the music sounds or how much I swore. If I paint, people will see the picture but not the meaning. It seems so obvious to me but everyone just seems to... close their eyes. Or at least shut off their brain. As if I see things they don't. But when they don't listen, how can I communicate that to them? It's so frustrating." Allie is a high school student and has big plans to make the world a better place. But her own head is pitting against her, throwing rocks in her path on a daily basis. Everything seems to be great for a while but what happens when her world suddenly comes crashing down around her? Can she ever recover? A coming-of-age story that deals with mental ilnesses, grief, first loves and family, briefly taps into the subject of religion and will likely enrapture you. Trigger warning: mental illnesses, self harm, death, dealing with grief, mentions of guns and gun control, mentions of cults, mentions of homophobia, dissociation. Names of bands, band members and song titles have been changed but at this point I want to credit mainly Palaye Royale, the band 'Homesick Soldiers' that is mentioned throughout is heavily based off them, but I'm sure if you're familiar with them you would have been able to tell that :)Complete
Keep it Casual
She's lived the last 20 years trying not dwell on the traumatic hardships of her past as they constantly replay in the back of her mind. Made a promise to live a full (semi carefree) life, spreading love and joy, all the while never wanting (more like fearing) anything permanent. It can feel lonely, but it's how she's always coped. And with his own hardships, he's not looking for anything other than to have a good time and celebrate with old friends on their new chapter in life. Somewhat acquainted due to mutual friends from back in the wonderfully exciting years of puberty and teenage drama, two young adults reconnect in a new kind of way. Deeper and more complex than they could ever prepare themselves for. Keeping things casual is a lot easier said than done. The real question is, do they want to? ---------------------------------------------------------- "No te preocupes, Princesa. I won't spill the tea." He winks then takes a step closer towards the other man. "But we're gonna have to have a little... Talk. Man to man." The 25 year old woman is right there blocking the young mechanic as he takes a few menacing steps forwards, again. He then lets out a breathy laugh at the worried look on the young woman's face. Looking towards the slight older man, eyes locked on his every movement, Rio mangages to speak between his menacing laughter. Said laughter coming out light and amused at first, but then turns into such twisted amusement it causes a spike of anxiety in the younger woman. It's almost like it's all a sick joke to him at the moment. "...Uh, I- I ain't- I ain't- I ain't gonna kill nobody." He chuckles as he looks around at no one in particular with a twinkle in his eyes, taking a deep breath. "Nah, man. But this little... Fling... Y'all got going on... Fo' sure. Most definitely."

Ten years after leaving their Catholic boarding school, three former classmates meet up at the headmistress's retirement, and find the past still has resonances in the present. This started as my attempt at the Open Novella Contest 2021 (20,000-40,000 words. This is at the upper end of this range.)
