Abelard thought, so long as he did not approach the protagonist, he'd be completely fine. Disregarding any of the reputation the original gained as an upraising holy knight, and become a pious obedient worshipper of God, throwing away the sword.
It only later occurred to Abelard how much he underestimated the monastery's value they placed on him; they just don't seem to let him go!
